Kohlrabi has never really been on my radar for vegetables to purchase at the supermarket. So in a way the CSA has been an eye-opener. Last summer I got obsessed with tomatillos - they were so great for making quick sauces and adding zing to a dish. This summer it's kohlrabi. You can throw it into any salad and it instantly adds a refreshing crunch. It's definitely a nice alternative to radishes, when you don't want that sting or fartiness that radishes can impart. Kohlrabi tastes a bit like broccoli stem but a bit milder. It's perfect julienned raw in a salad on a hot summer day.
Wayne also figured out that it tasted great in the corn soup that he made, with a bit of olive oil and lime juice and salt.
This group is for me, Wayne, Holly and Nick to share what we've done with our CSA share. We've been eating such fabulous food that it would be a shame not to share it!
Phew, I was able to complete week 1 of the pushups regimen. Not as bad as I thought - but weirdly enough I felt the worst on Thursday. I sort of felt like I had been punched in the ribs. I guess I've been getting extra practice too with doing pushups in class - although I've been avoiding knuckle pushups, as my thumb is still feeling wonky from all those weeks ago when I jammed in kumite.
I'm resting up this weekend for promotion tomorrow - wish me luck on going for my brown belt! (er and I'll probably lay off the pushups for monday, I want to have enough strength left for kumite so that I don't get my ass whupped by a black belt.)
yay, motivation! i've seriously been meaning to start some kind of pushup regimen so this will hopefully help me to stick with it. Besides I've gotta step up my training now that i'm going for my brown belt. Too bad promotion's only in a week, it would have helped me not be totally dead afterwards!
the smell of meat cooking is irresistible. that's what i was thinking when i walked past a gyro cart on my way to getting lunch today. There's something about that smell that makes my belly rumble no matter what. Maybe the smell calls up a deep primal urge. At least that's what it seems like happens at R.U.B. Angrychef and I went there last night, and it was packed and loud and filled with mostly tables of men stuffing their faces with MEAT.
R.U.B. was decent. OK, well, good for NY barbecue. I had the pulled pork sandwich and Angrychef had the beef brisket sandwich. The brisket was more on the chewy side than the tender side, which was rather disappointing. The pork was better, definitely moist and tender, but could have used a bit more salt. The sauces that they provide on table were on the sweet side, and they could have used more heat to balance it out. The "spicy" barbecue sauce wasn't spicy by any stretch of the imagination. My favorite, surprisingly, was the vinegar sauce. It had a nice mix of sour and sweet with a touch of heat.
In the grand scheme of things, R.U.B. is definitely not as good as anything I've had in Texas. New Yorkers also need to learn how to eat barbecue...don't be so sissy with your sauce!! Don't put it on the side in a little squirt! Slather your meat with it! Sheesh. I'll have to check out Smoke Joint in Fort Greene next and see how they do their barbecue. Of course I am totally looking forward to our jaunt down to Texas in early June for Angrychef's dad's and stepmom's 30th wedding anniversary. Can you say roadfoodtrip?
i'm finally getting around to starting to write about my food experiences. It's to help me remember where I've been and what I thought about various restaurants and other food establishments. Perhaps it'll also help my friends and family find suggestions for good places to eat. I'm also interested in writing about the political and social implications of food in the context of where I live. New York is an amazing place to be for food, and it's a great opportunity for me to explore what this all means!
The name of the blog comes from a Chinese phrase - and it's totally true in my case. I always want to try everything and tend to over-order - my friends and family always chide me and say "Your eyes are bigger than your stomach."
So here's to eating and enjoying food!
I am so glad to see this group. I just moved from Tucson, where we had a CSA, to Fargo.... read more
